Gadgets You'll Still Gonna Love Next Year

When it comes to shopping for tech gadgets, there are times wherein it's worth to wait for a new and improved model of the device you've been eyeing on for a quite a while now.

Here are some tech products that you'll never regret on buying even until next year when its better successor arrives.

SSDs
SSDs or Solid State Drives provide a high-speed, low-power data solution both for personal and enterprise use. Having an SSD is ideal for someone who is willing to pay more for faster performance, and those who don't mind getting limited storage capacity or can just work around that. Though the prices of SSDs may drop over time, new and upcoming models won't be significantly faster than what we have today for a long time.

An SSD-equipped PC will boot in seconds, certainly under a minute. A hard drive requires time to speed up to operating specs, and will continue to be slower than an SSD during normal operation. A PC or Mac with an SSD boots faster, launches apps faster, and has higher overall performance. Whether it's for fun, school, or business, the extra speed may be the difference between finishing on time or failing.

Windows 7 Notebooks
Even though Microsoft's Windows 8 offers better performance and a handful of touch-friendly features, a number of consumers were disappointed by its new Start-button-no-more UI and the high learning curve needed to master its navigation.

New computers are now rolled out with the new Windows 8 OS. Though if you still prefer the traditional look and feel of Windows interface, there may still be a slim chance of finding slightly older models that come with Windows 7. As days go by, stocks of Windows 7-based computers will dwindle and there'll come a day when all you can find is Windows 8. If you buy a Windows 7 notebook and decide later that you want to upgrade to the new OS, you're going to shell out around $40 or less.

Monitors
Even though you use a laptop almost everyday, it's still recommended to have full-size monitors both at home and at work. The more pixels and the larger screen you have, the more productive you'll be. There are lots of affordable 23-inch, 1920 x 1080 screens today that you can get under $150. However, if you can stretch your budget a little bit more, it's better to get an LED-backlit monitor that has 1920 x 1200 resolution. Even if more and more manufacturers are integrating touch screen displays since last year, these monitors can serve you well for many years to come.

Media Tablets
You don't have to wait if you want a low-cost, high-portability media tablet because you can already get tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Google Nexus 7, or Barnes and Noble Nook HD for $199, as well as the iPad Mini. Since none of these companies refreshes their flagship products more than once a year, you'll have no regrets if you buy one now. They'll also be hard pressed to improve the high-res screens, speedy CPUs, and long battery lives even by that time. Prices for these tablets are also not expected to drop its price that much, otherwise manufacturers that sell them would be taking in a huge loss.

Printers
Printers keep getting better like most technologies, however the differences are not much of significance that most of us would hardly notice. If you're going to buy a decent quality printer or an all-in-one right now, it should still be more than adequate five years from now.

The image quality that you can get from a budget printer is good enough when printing your own high-quality color photos. When asked which printer type is better, a laser printer is better than going with an inkjet since laser printers with locking paper drawers have a tendency to suffer from lesser jams.

Set-Top Boxes
Want to have a better content viewing experience? Smart TVs let you view streaming video but can be an extremely expensive solution. Luckily, there are affordable set-top boxes like the Roku box and Apple TV, which allows you to stream your favorite content directly from the Internet to your home theater system.

There will always be new models that will come out eventually, but since the models available on the market today already have a 1080p output, that should be enough to be the main feature that you should need for now and for many years to come. For example, the Roku 2 XS is perfect for streaming content from services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and hundreds of other video channels while offering a USB port for connecting to local storage for just $99.

External Hard Drives and USB Flash Disks
The birth of USB 3.0 has been the biggest advancement in the external storage technology in the past few years. If you buy a USB 3.0-compliant hard drive today, most likely you'll still be happy with it in 2014 and beyond. While external SSDs can possibly get cheaper over the next few years, it still won't reach price parity with external hard drives for a long period of time. Wireless hard drive, which is a relatively new category, will continue to improve over the next few year, however, it still won't match the speed and ease-of-use that you can get from a simple USB 3.0 drive.

eReaders
If you fancy reading on a grayscale eInk screen, then the eReader is just the right gadget for you. You can get quality eReaders such as the Kindle for $69 and the Nook Simple Touch for $99. It's actually hard to imagine what other features you'd want to get from an eBook reader that you won't get now. Well, maybe companies such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon will roll out color eBook readers, but right now that technology is somewhat cost prohibitive and unlikely to be attractive to the consumers.

If you already have most, if not all, of these trending products we showed you, then it's best to take very good care of them. Devices like these can be very useful and can meet all our tech-related needs, now and for the years to come.

Best Kindle Fire HD Tips and Tricks

You will find hundreds of Kindle Fire HD tips and tricks out there. There are even books that showcases these tips and tricks. To help you out, we have compiled the best tips and tricks for getting the most out of your Kindle Fire HD.

Best Kindle Fire HD Tips and Tricks

1. Access the Hidden Camera App
The front facing camera of the Kindle Fire HD is intended for video calls using Skype. However, there isn't an obvious way for it to be used in taking pictures or recording videos. Here's how you can access the hidden Camera app and use it to take pictures, videos, and panoramic shots:

STEP 1: Install ES File Explorer to your Kindle Fire HD. You can also use other apps to find hidden files under Amazon’s customized Android 4.0.
STEP 2: Open ES File Explorer and tap the AppMgr menu at the top.
STEP 3: Tap the Category menu.
STEP 4: When the Select types window appears, tap System apps.
STEP 5: From the list of system apps, tap the Camera icon, and then tap Open.

2. Install YouTube on Kindle Fire HD

STEP 1: Set your Kindle Fire HD to side load apps.
STEP 2: Swipe down on the Home screen, then tap More, and then tap Device.
STEP 3: Set Allow Installation of Applications to On.
STEP 4: Download the youtube.apk file to your computer.
STEP 5: Connect your Kindle Fire HD to your computer.
STEP 6: When AutoPlay opens, click Open device to view files. You can also open it in Computer.
STEP 7: Go to the Download folder and copy the youtube.apk file to it.
STEP 8: Using the ES File Explorer, open the Download folder.
STEP 9: Tap the YouTube icon and follow the on screen instructions to install it.

Once installed, you will see the YouTube icon among your apps unlike the hidden Camera app.

3. Get Rid of Annoying Ads

Amazon was able to subsidize the cost of Kindle Fire HD by displaying full ads on the Lock Screen and text ads inside its interface. If you are not a fan of these ads, you can get rid of them by unsubscribing the Special Offerssection from your online Amazon account. Just be aware that deactivating these ads would require you to pay a one-time charge of $15.

STEP 1: Login to your Amazon account.
STEP 2: Go to You Account, then go to Manage Your Kindle, then select Manage Your Device.
STEP 3: Select your Kindle Fire HD, then look for Special Offers, and then set it to Unsubscribe.

If you want to deactivate the ads displayed in your carousel view, go to your tablet's Settings, then on the Main menu tap More, then Applications. Go to Amazon Home Recommendations, and then select Hide.

4. Lock Screen Password

Your credit card is tied to your Amazon account so you can easily purchase contents for your tablet. And since your tablet is tied with your Amazon account, ergo, your credit card as well, it is a must that you protect your information and other sensitive data. You can do this by enabling Lock Screen Password to secure your tablet.

STEP 1: On the Home screen, swipe from the top of the screen down to bring up the notifications screen, then tap More.
STEP 2: Under Settings, tap Security.
STEP 3: Look for Lock Screen Password and set it to On.
STEP 4: Enter a numeric PIN code twice. It needs to be at least 4 digits.
STEP 5: Tap Done.

5. Set Up Your Email Account

Even if the Kindle Fire HD is intended to be used as a media consumption device, you can still be productive by setting up your email account on it.

STEP 1: On the Home screen, tap Apps.
STEP 2: Tap the Device button, then tap the E-mail icon.
STEP 3:  Tap the email service provider for the account you want to add.
STEP 4: Enter your E-mail address, Password, and Description on the fields provided.
STEP 5: You will receive a message telling you that you might have to pay for a premium or Plus subscription to get POP access to your email. Click OK.
STEP 6: Once your account and password is verified, you will be able to view your Inbox, go into your account settings, or add another account.

6. Connect a Bluetooth Keyboard for Faster Typing

If the onscreen keyboard is not doing much for you, you can connect a Bluetooth keyboard to your Kindle Fire HD for faster and easier typing.

STEP 1: Turn on your keyboard and press the Connect button. Each Bluetooth keyboard varies so you can check its documentation on how to turn it on.
STEP 2: On your tablet's Home screen, swipe from the top of the screen down, then tap More.
STEP 3: Under Settings, tap Wireless, and then tap Bluetooth.
STEP 4: Look for Enable Bluetooth and tap On. Your Kindle Fire HD will now start searching for available devices.
STEP 5: Once you see your Bluetooth keyboard under Available devices, tap on it.
STEP 6: When you see the Pairing Request screen with a 4-digit code, enter the code on the keyboard, then tap Enter.

7. Set Google as Default Search Engine

Bing in the Silk browser is the default search engine in Kindle Fire HD since Amazon partnered with Microsoft. However, if you prefer Google as your default search engine, you can do that easily by following these steps:

STEP 1: From the Home screen, tap Web.
STEP 2: Open a webpage, then click the menu icon, and then tap Settings.
STEP 3: Under Silk Settings, tap Search engine, and then tap Google from the list.

8. Add Music Files From Your Computer

STEP 1: Connect the Kindle Fire HD to your computer.
STEP 2: When AutoPlay opens, click Open device to view files. You can also open it in Computer.
STEP 3: Open the Music folder and transfer your music files from your computer’s hard drive or network drive to your Kindle Fire HD.
STEP 4: After the music files have been transferred, unplug the Kindle Fire HD from the computer.
STEP 5: From the tablet's Home screen, tap Music.
STEP 6:  Tap the Device button and the songs or album you want to listen to.

9. Restore to Factory Settings

If you have decided to sell or gift your Kindle Fire HD, it is no question that you will want to reset it to factory default. Factory Reset will erase all data stored on your tablet, so it is recommended to do a back up before doing it.

STEP 1: From the Home screen, swipe from the top of the screen down to display the notifications, then tap More.
STEP 2: Under Settings, tap Device.
STEP 3: Under Device, tap Reset to Factory Defaults.
STEP 4: Finally, tap Erase Everything and wait for the process to complete. This will erase all your data and reboot your tablet to how it was fresh out of the box.

Devices and Gadgets That Can Also Be Hacker Friendly

There are countless devices nowadays that can be used and operated using WiFi or Bluetooth connection, which most technically-inclined users can consider as practical and convenient in their day-to-day lives. But do you know that they can also be used as a means of making you or your personal information vulnerable to hacking? Below are some simple and not-so-simple devices you did not know can also be penetrated by hackers.

Home Security Systems

Home electronic security system, if installed incorrectly, can make your home more susceptible to technically-skilled intruders than it was without it installed. With the growing number of companies manufacturing security systems for residential use, it all depends on how secure the system can provide. Smart thieves can lift or unlock the code using a stolen smartphone, or secretly tap the wireless signal from a distance when you open your door. Once they obtain your security code, they'll wait for a chance when you're not at home, then unlock your security with ease, and proceed in robbing your house. If you are using one of these home security systems, make sure you have set the strongest password possible. Also, be cautious of any onlookers or bystanders that may be watching your activities at home, and report them immediately.

Medical Implants

Even medical implants are not exempted in the hacking industry. A researcher who attended the recently-held Black Hat convention in Las Vegas demonstrated how hacking can be done thru the wireless signals transmitted by automatic insulin pumps implanted inside a human body. A few years ago, a group of researchers also discovered how to shut down a pacemaker via remote control. According to Dr. Kevin Fu, associate professor in Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, hackers can use a wireless interface to utilize another computer or device to change the settings on a medical device to infuse insulin or control the defibrillation of a heart. Because of this, manufacturers are now looking for ways on how to secure these devices to prevent unauthorized alteration that may cause heart attacks and worse, death.

Garage Door Openers

Similar to home electronic security systems, garage door openers can also be easily hacked by anyone who has a smartphone. The security code that is being transmitted wirelessly can be obtained by thieves thru the use of smartphones, while others go with the conventional way of using wires. So make sure not to leave your garage door open for a long period of time or have someone watch the garage door for you against any suspicious-looking people.

Portable Gaming Gadgets

Older electronic gaming devices such as the first generation Nintendo DS that works only with WEP-enabled wireless networks can also be a medium for attracting hackers to your network. Make sure that your home network uses WPA security standard, instead of WEP, which is the poorest form of wireless security. Hackers can easily determine the password and once they established a connection to your network, they can access all your shared files and information in a blink of an eye. So make sure your child is not using anymore these hand-me-down gaming devices wirelessly.

Old Baby Monitors

Beware of buying second-hand almost-obsolete baby monitors. This harmless-looking device can also be hacked by tapping into its video and audio feeds by anyone who could receive its channel frequency. If you're planning to get one, get the newer models that have several channel frequencies or better yet, WiFi connection so it will be more difficult for unauthorized persons to connect to its frequency or signal.

Personal GPS Locators

These small gadgets that allow parents to track their children can also be considered dangerous to your kid's safety, if not equipped with the proper security features. Researchers have demonstrated how one common GPS tracking device is hacked and was able to follow its user. Make sure to get one that has a security feature to keep your child safe, including you.

Traffic Lights

Have you seen some scenes in a movie wherein a tech geek manipulated the street traffic lights to turn all green using his super power computer? Well, that is actually possible. Receivers on street lights can communicate through infrared transmission, which is usually done by emergency, police, and fire vehicles so that they can immediately change the traffic light to go all green. Unfortunately, highly-technical people can also build such kind of infrared transmission to control the traffic lights, either for prank or criminal purposes.
